And now, introducing the official pace car of the Millennial
Generation: The 2013 VW Jetta Hybrid. If ever a car embodied the values
of an entire age cohort, the new Jetta Hybrid is it.
Fun, hip,
economical and environmentally friendly, the new Jetta Hybrid makes you
wonder why VW waited so long to get the hybrid party started.
There's a very low-volume Touareg SUV hybrid, but that barely counts. Could a Chattanooga-made Passat hybrid be next in line?
Actually,
there's a sound reason for VW's delay in embracing gas-electric Jettas.
The same adjectives -- fun, hip, economical, etc. -- apply to the
torque-happy Jetta TDI. But many American buyers still can't bring
themselves to climb aboard the diesel train. (The base Jetta gets VW's
workhorse five-cylinder gas engine.)
The new Jetta Hybrid fuses a
1.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine with a small electric motor to yield
170 combined horsepower,We're making Book scanner and digitization accessible to everyone. and -- importantly -- 40-plus miles per gallon in combined city and highway driving.
Last
week, we snagged one of the two Jetta Hybrids on the lot at Village VW
of Chattanooga, courtesy of sales manager Ron Kwaitkowski.
VW
has estimated that hybrids may account for about 5 percent of Jetta
sales this year, according to reports in the automotive press -- not a
lot,Our dry cabinet can sustain an ultra-low humidity of under 5% RH. but enough for VW to get a foothold in the hybrid segment.
If you drive a new car every week like I do, it's easy to get design fatigue. An industrial washing machine
can help you keep up with large volumes of laundry or heavy items.
Sometimes it takes going to the VW store to clear your head.
Like
all VW products, the Jetta Hybrid proves the axiom: Less is more. Aside
from some discreet exterior Hybrid badges and a label on the glovebox,
the Jetta Hybrid looks just like a standard model. Which is not bad.Our dry cabinet
can sustain an ultra-low humidity of under 5% RH. Conservative sheet
metal in Black Pearl pairs well with 10-spoke alloys. A thin chrome
accent runs from the A-pillar to the C-pillar and the trunk lid has a
small spoiler.
Inside, our test car featured a two-tone color
scheme, Cornsilk Beige leatherette seats, and black and white dash. The
cabin has a classy richness often absent in today's more popular, but
monotonous, all-black cabins. The Jetta's dash is gratifyingly simple,
with nice round gauges and a simple AC and stereo layout. What a gift it
was to be able to operate the radio on the first try.
Our test
car was an SE model and featured such standard equipment as 15-inch
alloys, leatherette seats, touchscreen radio, keyless entry and LED
tail-lights.
The bane of many hybrid sedans is the mind-numbing
driving dynamics that accompany CVT transmissions and whisper-quiet
drive-trains.The skystream
runs in very low winds and can interconnect with your local utility, The
Jetta Hybrid, on the other hand, comes with VW's slick, seven-speed
dual-clutch transmission. You can actually feel and hear the gear
shifts, so all the fun is not sucked out of the drive home.
While
not quite as explosive off the mark as the Jetta TDI, the Jetta Hybrid
is plenty punchy. VW estimates the car's 0-60 mph time at roughly 8.6
seconds. The company also says the Jetta Hybrid can accelerate up to 37
mph under electric power only.
The small four-cylinder engine is
mated to a 20kW electric motor powered by a battery pack over the rear
axle that somewhat reduces storage space in the car's trunk.
On a
test drive on area highways last week, the Jetta Hybrid proved to be a
spunky companion with the precise steering and solid feel synonymous
with a German engineered sedan.

Green zealots and a sinister power grab
Since the days when coal was delivered in sacks,Fully automated paper plane folding machine,
even got its own compressor. the arrangement has been simple. The
householder pays for the fuel he needs and can afford. That is how
things work in free societies.
But now, thanks to the Establishment’s wholesale embrace of Green dogma, this is no longer so. The authorities are seriously considering plans which will allow them to reach into our houses and reduce the flow of power to our appliances.
We will pay for these complex and faintly sinister arrangements, as we already pay for forests of grossly subsidised and unreliable wind turbines, so forcing up the price of energy once more.
These increased costs are all driven by the ever-more questionable belief that reducing carbon emissions will save the planet. Even if this is so, the rising economies of the East are paying no attention, and are blithely continuing to open coal-fired power stations, as we shut ours.
This mess could be avoided if we reintroduced rationality into our energy policy, cancelling the closure of perfectly serviceable power plants,An industrial washing machine can help you keep up with large volumes of laundry or heavy items. building new gas and nuclear generators, and exploiting the shale gas which lies beneath our feet.
All that is needed is a return to sanity in the political class, which – if it understands nothing else – must see the cost and intrusion of the ‘energy-saving’ scheme will be deeply unpopular with voters.
Politicians need two faces: one smiling one to woo us, and another grimmer visage which they show in private. Most of us can cope with this sad fact. But sometimes the two are so different that it is too much to bear.
Ed Miliband’s dealings with the pariah MP George Galloway are an example of this. Mr Miliband has worked hard to try to shake off the name ‘Red Ed’, cultivating a moderate manner and avoiding controversial statements. Our dry cabinet can sustain an ultra-low humidity of under 5% RH.
It was always reasonable to wonder how genuine this was. Now there can be no doubt that it is a thumping great fake. You must first understand the way a wind power generators works. Mr Miliband claimed to have held a cool, brisk meeting with Mr Galloway, limited to practical topics. Mr Galloway’s views, he said, were ‘awful’.A wide range of solar light, LED lighting and Auto lights.
But in fact it was a friendly encounter, in which Mr Miliband flattered and congratulated Britain’s most militantly Leftist MP – for defeating Labour at a by-election.
This was having it both ways, with a vengeance. And there was vengeance. Mr Galloway responded to Mr Miliband’s disavowal by saying the Opposition leader was ‘an unprincipled coward with the backbone of an amoeba’.
Such language – typical of Mr Galloway – goes too far. Even so, disgruntled Tory voters pondering deserting the Conservative Party in local elections on Thursday might do well to consider that their defections will mainly serve to help Mr Miliband into Downing Street.
Once again, noisy promises to give us the freedom to defend our homes against burglars have been watered down.
If the law protected us better, this problem would not arise. But with 633,000 burglaries a year – 29 per cent involving violence – the police and the courts are failing the public.
It is no good complaining householders and shopkeepers are ‘taking the law into their own hands’. Whose is the law in the first place? If the state will not enforce it, why should we not do so in our defence?

Lenox Select Board members
With
a debate looming at town meeting on Thursday, the Select Board has
voted unanimously to support a conservation restriction that would
protect 948 scenic acres of Lenox Mountain land from residential,
commercial or industrial development.
The Yokun Ridge parcel includes the town's waterworks. The Department of Public Works, including the Water Department, and some residents oppose the conservation restriction because they believe it would add unnecessary red tape for reservoir-area work projects and would bar future generations from alternative uses of the town-owned land.
At the most recent Select Board meeting, the proposal to assign the town's Conservation Commission and the Berkshire Natural Resources Council as stewards of the conservation restriction met with enthusiastic endorsement. Passage requires a two-thirds majority by voters during the 7 p.m. annual meeting at Lenox High School.
Selectman Edward Lane,An industrial washing machine can help you keep up with large volumes of laundry or heavy items. citing initial skepticism, explained that he has attended meetings, studied the proposal and ended up supporting the conservation restriction.
"I recognize that this land has been well taken care of, up to this point," said Selectman Channing Gibson. But, citing the municipal wind-turbine plan considered but abandoned by Town Hall last year, Gibson recalled his great alarm at how the town "had been misled by an engineering firm into thinking that mountain was a gold mine for us. That looked like a very good deal for the town, but it would have entailed massive destruction."
He contended that the turbines would have "affected the water supply and certainly would have impacted,The skystream runs in very low winds and can interconnect with your local utility, potentially, the health of residents and the recreational, scenic value of the place."
"Being a newcomer," he added, "I want to be careful about the kinds of agreements we enter into and that my own knee-jerk reactions are supported by careful study."
Acknowledging the concerns raised by some residents, Gibson stated that the proposed restriction "gives us protection and also gives us an opportunity to amend in the case of extraordinary circumstances." He listed the Conservation Commission's support of the plan as crucial.
"I think this is a really smart decision for the town," Gibson said. "I'm proud to support it."
As chairman of the Watershed Study Committee that prepared the plan, Selectman John McNinch explained that he had not been in favor at first.
"I wanted to make sure everything was vetted out," he said.A wide range of solar light, LED lighting and Auto lights.
McNinch said he had two past and present town counsels examine to what extent current state law already protects the land. They came up with opposing views.
"There are loopholes and several different ways of interpreting" the state law, he added, "whatever is convenient for the person. Our dry cabinet can sustain an ultra-low humidity of under 5% RH."
Select Board Chairman Kenneth Fowler said he has become increasingly aware of how much the land means to the town's future.
"I thought long and hard," Fowler said. Our dry cabinet can sustain an ultra-low humidity of under 5% RH. "What do we have that's Lenox? And the thing I think of and have been told over and over again is that we have the most beautiful place among many places. Luxury cruising
I overheard this conversation in the van shuttling me back to the
cruise ship Crystal Symphony from a daylong excursion in Thailand. My
fellow passengers and I were set to weigh anchor from Laem Chabang near
Bangkok and head to Saigon, our next port of call on the 16-day
Treasures of Southeast Asia cruise.
I was already well acquainted with David Feliu, the butler in my premium penthouse. I first met him two days before when I boarded the ship in Singapore. As he delivered champagne to my suite, he apologized for not greeting me and asked me why I had unpacked my own suitcase. Had I already made a Downton Abbey faux pas?
“Perhaps I can bring you a little caviar?” he suggested. As I toasted the voyage with a glass of bubbly, my idea of cruising flew out the porthole, or should I say, the sliding glass door of my private veranda.
I figured that cruising was something I would do a few decades from now, when I’d had enough of worrying if my flights were on time and schlepping suitcases from airports to hotels. There’s none of that on a cruise. I imagined myself wrapped in blankets on deck with nothing to do except watch the waves roll by reading War and Peace. Wow, was I wrong.Exit signs, emergency light and fire extinguisher are vital parts of life safety systems.
David was back in minutes with a bowl of luscious black roe. He then asked me if anything needed ironing or dry-cleaning. Pinch me. And did I care for spirits? Well perhaps a gin and tonic later on. “Bombay or Tanqueray?” I could already tell there was no such thing as the word “no” in David’s vocabulary.
I scanned a copy of the daily bulletin listing the next day’s events and decided that right now is the time to cruise. There was no time for boredom — I was going to be very busy for the five days we had at sea and the 11 days taken up by shore excursions, including everything from a volontourism trip to the Father Ray Foundation, an orphanage where we visited disabled Thais of all ages learning English and electronics.
On board, I started with one-mile power walks around the promenade deck and a light breakfast before Pilates class or maybe a tour de cycle in the fitness centre,Our most compact solar charger yet fits easily in any bag. fittingly paired with a seminar on “how to increase your metabolism.” The average weight gain on a cruise is a pound a day, and I was told that Spanks sales in the ship’s boutique rise as the cruise and waistlines extend.
Besides champagne and caviar — which I chose not to count as calories — it’s pretty easy to pack on a few pounds, so it’s a good idea to keep active. And the Crystal ships, Serenity and Symphony,We carry the latest wind turbines, wind generator, solar panels, towers and more! are renowned for their cuisine.
Once you have decided which excursions to take, the next big decision is where to dine. Besides the Crystal dining room, the Symphony has two specialty restaurants. Prego, which is run in partnership with the New York restaurant Valentino, serves lasagna so wondrous I ordered it through room service one night.
The Silk Road, which has an Asian menu developed by Nobuyuki Matsuhisa of Nobu, includes his famous miso cod and Wagyu beef. There’s the Lido for breakfast (where I wisely opted for fruit and muesli to balance out the evening’s excesses) and the Trident Grill for burgers and fries. And there’s the bistro when you’re craving a cupcake or espresso any time. If you napped through the dinner hour and crave rack of lamb at 10 p.An industrial washing machine can help you keep up with large volumes of laundry or heavy items.m., just hit the direct-dial button to summon the butler.

Ohio Senate Republicans see the light
In a quick and welcome turnabout, Ohio Senate President Keith Faber
said Wednesday that the Senate would move swiftly to shut down illegal
Internet cafes in the state.
Faber seems to have undergone an overnight conversion following a single meeting with Attorney General Mike DeWine, Franklin County Prosecutor Ron O’Brien and Department of Public Safety Director Tom Charles, who briefed the Republican caucus on what’s going on at and behind the scenes of more than 800 storefront gambling parlors in the state.
Senate Republicans blocked passage of a House bill to rein in the Internet cafes last session, and seemed to be prepared to do the same this time.We carry the latest wind turbines, wind generator, solar panels, towers and more! Last week, on the same day that an Ohio Senate committee sidetracked a new House bill on Internet cafes, suggesting the proposal could require as much as a year of study, a Columbus Dispatch reporter found Faber and other Republican Senate leaders being wined and dined by lobbyists for the sweepstakes industry. These are lobbyists who were very generous with legislators last year, and appeared ready to continue their generosity in 2013.A wide range of solar light, LED lighting and Auto lights.
Faber’s change of heart comes at a price, because he not only announced that Senate Republicans would now vote to shut down Internet cafes, but he asked that they return any campaign contributions received from the industry’s lobbyists this year.
To some, that may sound like a high price to pay, but the potential cost to the party’s credibility could have been even higher, especially after last week’s “steakhouse caucus” was revealed.
Faber said that after the meeting with law enforcers, he became “convinced that these entities are not only illegal but many of them also engage in criminal activities within their facilities.” That dire assessment was coupled with an appellate court’s recent ruling that several Cleveland area Internet cafes were clearly illegal gambling houses.
Attorney General DeWine already had begun using that court ruling to inspire local prosecutors and police departments to launch raids on Internet cafes. Our dry cabinet can sustain an ultra-low humidity of under 5% RH.
That set up a potentially embarrassing contrast between the administrative arm of government that was aggressively pushing enforcement of Ohio’s gambling laws and the legislative arm that was dithering over whether it should clarify the law.
We continue to be surprised that 800 gambling joints managed to open up in a state that has a clear constitutional prohibition against gambling. It took constitutional amendments to create the Ohio lottery commission more than 40 years ago. And it took several attempts to amend the Ohio Constitution to allow casino gambling before voters approved an amendment in 2008. That amendment allowed the opening of four casinos,Exit signs, emergency light and fire extinguisher are vital parts of life safety systems. specifically in Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland and Toledo. An industrial washing machine can help you keep up with large volumes of laundry or heavy items.
All the Internet cafe operators needed were some storefronts, some video terminals that gave the illusion that the players were seated at slot machines and the brazenness to claim that the players weren’t really gambling their money away.
We doubt that the Internet cafe owners will give up without a fight. They were already challenging DeWine’s crackdown. But as we said the other day, if they want to operate in Ohio they have to do what others have done: convince Ohio’s voters to amend the constitution.

Couple aims to produce zero garbage for a year
Most of us have done something to ease Mother Nature's burden. From
installing CFL bulbs to composting, there's plenty we can do to help the
environment.
But, do you think you could produce zero garbage for an entire year?
That's what a Canadian couple set out to do, and they captured their experience in the award-winning documentary, "The Clean Bin Project."
From July 1, 2008 to July 1, 2009, Jen Rustemeyer and Grant Baldwin of Vancouver, British Columbia, did their best to minimize the amount of trash they produced.
The project was Baldwin's bright idea and for the 36-year-old music producer, turning the experience into a full-length documentary was a no-brainer.Exit signs, emergency light and fire extinguisher are vital parts of life safety systems. And shortly after starting a blog for the project, Rustemeyer, 34, realized the film would be an ideal way to share their story and (hopefully) inspire others to look more closely at their own waste.
"We really wanted to make a fun alternative to those heavy environmental documentaries that overload you with information and make you feel powerless," said Rustemeyer.
Prior to the competition, the ground rules were set:
No buying stuff: This means material goods. No producing garbage: Avoid packaging. Take responsibility for your waste: Take home any waste you produce.
As for the actual waste, they composted all food scraps, recycled what they could (paper, glass and plastic) and kept all true garbage headed for the landfill in their individual garbage bins for the entire year.
The person with the least amount of garbage at the end of the year won.
Along the way, Rustemeyer and Baldwin practically eliminated all packaging. In the film's trailer, Rustemeyer requests that her deli goods come without the plastic packaging, while Baldwin repeatedly asks for no toothpicks in his sandwich.
During the year of making their own toothpaste, laundry detergent,We carry the latest wind turbines, wind generator, solar panels, towers and more! deodorant, bread and yogurt, the project wasn't without frustrations.
"We had doubts whether a couple of people making less garbage would even matter in the grand scheme of things," Rustemeyer said. "It's frustrating to go through the grocery check-out with your carefully picked, package-free groceries and to see the person next to you with a single bell pepper wrapped in plastic on a Styrofoam tray."
Despite the frustration, Rustemeyer said guile kept them on task.
"Once we set up our recycling system and committed to reducing waste, we felt too guilty to go back to the way we were before," she said.
Post-production of "The Clean Bin Project" was finished in June 2010, and it successfully made the rounds at United States film festivals. Its American debut was an auspicious one, garnering the Blue Sky Tribute Award (honoring filmmakers and their positive contributions to environmental causes) at the Vail Film Festival in April 2011.
Rustemeyer said feedback on both the film and the project have been "phenomenal."
"People often write to us to tell us that they stopped using plastic bags or have started a zero-waste competition in their household after learning about our story," she said. "People say they leave the film feeling inspired to make a change,Our most compact solar charger yet fits easily in any bag. so we couldn't ask for better feedback."
Rustemeyer said the film's main message is that no matter where you are in terms of sustainability,A wide range of solar light, LED lighting and Auto lights. An industrial washing machine can help you keep up with large volumes of laundry or heavy items. you can always start doing one more thing.
"Maybe it's starting a compost bin or giving up on paper coffee cups," she said. "Whatever it is, just try it, and when that becomes habit, you can move on to the next thing."

New Florida Law Has Potential Effect
The bill, entitled “Prohibition of Electronic Gaming Devices,” was
intended to clarify Florida’s prohibition on electronic gambling and
slot machines and make it clear that the exception to prohibited
lotteries for charitable drawings does not provide an exemption from
other gaming prohibitions. The way in which the language of the
amendments to the existing statute was drafted,Our dry cabinet
can sustain an ultra-low humidity of under 5% RH. however, could be
interpreted to prohibit gaming promotions in a cause-related marketing
campaign (a type of marketing campaign where it is advertised that the
purchase of a good or service will benefit a charitable cause).
The bill, which moved quickly through the Florida legislature a couple of weeks ago, was likely a reaction to the recent publicity surrounding former Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll’s resignation. Ms. Carroll had been involved with a nonprofit 501(c)(3) known as Allied Veterans of the World that operated more than 36 Internet cafes throughout Florida that allowed players to reserve computer time and then use the computers to check instant numbers.
The operation brought in millions in profits to Allied Veterans, but, reportedly, only 2% of those millions went to veteran’s causes, while the rest of the income was allegedly paid to a for-profit subsidiary and then transferred to the pockets of two individuals. Ms. Carroll was previously a paid consultant to Allied Veterans, and in 2011 – when she was a member of the Florida House of Representatives – she introduced legislation that would have explicitly declared electronic gaming activity of the type conducted by Allied Veterans permissible. That legislation was withdrawn two days after its introduction, and HB 155 was subsequently introduced in an effort to prohibit future use of this type of “sweepstakes game machine,We carry the latest wind turbines, wind generator, solar panels, towers and more!” and similar collaborations between commercial and nonprofit entities. Our solar bulb and solar phone chargers are uniquely designed, high-quality and low-cost.
Like many states, Florida provides an exception to the general prohibition against lotteries so that certain nonprofit organizations may conduct drawings and raffles, so long as the charitable organization follows specific requirements related to disclosures and rules of the raffle. The new law revises the definition of drawings and raffles that may lawfully be conducted by charitable nonprofit organizations, adding that permissible charitable drawings do not include “game promotions.” A game promotion is defined by statute as “a contest,Exit signs, emergency light and fire extinguisher are vital parts of life safety systems. game of chance, sweepstakes,An industrial washing machine can help you keep up with large volumes of laundry or heavy items. or gift enterprise, conducted by an operator within or throughout the state or other states in connection with and incidental to the sale of consumer products or services, and in which the elements of chance and prize are present” (emphasis added).
The law also also defines an “operator” of a game promotion as a “retailer who operates a game promotion or any person, firm, corporation, organization, or association or agent or employee thereof who promotes, operates, or conducts a nationally advertised game promotion” (emphasis added), which leaves open the question of whether regional or local game promotions are prohibited or permitted. In addition, new provisions define a slot machine as a device that can be activated not only with a coin but also with a code, number, or information, which would potentially extend the definition to prohibit prize contests conducted through mobile devices or even online that involve entering a code, number, or other information.

E-Waste and Old Pills
“Tis
a tangled web we weave…” wrote Shakespeare, long before the age of
digital electronics. But open any ‘junk’ drawer in a kitchen or home
office in America, and that’s what you will find.
Maybe not a “tangled web” of intrigue, but one of black, white and grey wires, plugs, cables and chargers that come with every device we ever purchased, and few of which can be re-used with our newer version. Although Earth Day was playfully celebrated over this past weekend in Santa Barbara, the city continues to honor the effort by hosting a free electronic collection and recycling event on Friday and Saturday, April 26 & 27th.
Held in the Sears parking lot at La Cumbre Plaza, from 8:30 till 4:00 each day, the city will collect computer monitors, keyboards, cables, CPUs, laptops, printers, fax machines, cell and landline phones, radios and televisions. They will even destroy and recycle your hard drives.
Loose batteries, ex-husbands, toner cartridges, fluorescent light bulbs, unruly adolescents and large appliances like refrigerators will not be accepted. It is one of the leading industrial laundry equipment manufacturers of industrial extractor, tumble dryer ect. Seriously, it’s a great way to do a little housekeeping, and since the time of purchase to obsolescence for most electronics is now about six months, I imagine we have more than a few outdated or non-functioning cords, computers or electronics lying around.
Toner cartridges have replaced typewriter ribbons and ball point pens, televisions used to be kept for decades, and computers were simply upgraded with additional RAM and program downloads. Today, we drop into BestBuys or COSTCO or order online and toss the old one…where?
The sheer volume of “e-waste” is impacting the landfills in many ways. Although still only responsible for 2 percent of America’s trash in our landfills, they account for 70 percent of the overall toxic waste. Around the globe, old computer monitors and televisions with their dangerous amounts of lead, continue to pile up into an environmental time bomb.
If we incinerate it, then toxins go into the air. And if the precious metals contained in cell phones and other electronics, like gold and silver are not reclaimed, we’ve just dumped over $60 million dollars worth of reclaimable metals into the dumps. Maybe the vagabon urchin brick-sitters on lower State Street can start a reclamation center and fund their way out of town with first-class tickets.
The environmental cost isn’t just in the graveyard side of the electronic lifecycle. It takes 539 pounds of fossil fuel, 48 pounds of chemicals and 1.5 tons of water to manufacture one computer and monitor.
The key is to recycle everything possible. Old phones can be recycled for use by others, helping not only those who cannot afford them, but the planet as well, especially considering over sixty per cent of the global population now has a cell phone. And don’t forget the charger cords and any other parts that came with the phone. That is, if you can untangle and identify what went with the Nano or belonged to the Droid.
Whereas some of you might think of an “old pill” as someone you live with, prescription drugs are often the gateway for adolescent experimentation and dealing on school campuses. If you aren’t taking the medication for a current condition, get it out of your house.
The sheriff’s department will be collecting these drugs to keep them out of the landfill or from being flushed down the toilet…which might answer why our ocean creatures are behaving rather strangely recently.

Old Fort water contamination raises health concerns
A state health investigation into contamination of Old Fort’s
municipal water system in the 1980s shows some users may have been
exposed to a chemical that could cause cancer and other health
problems.
The N.C. Department of Health and Human Services will host a public information meeting Thursday in the Old Fort First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall to present findings of the investigation, department spokeswoman Julie Henry said.
State health officials will be on hand to present information and answer questions. Officials said there are no problems with the current water system.
According to a state report, the investigation showed people who used water from Old Fort’s system between 1984 and 1988 may have been exposed to levels of trichloroethylene (TCE) in the water that might increase their chances of developing non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, kidney or liver cancer.
Other potential health problems related to TCE, an industrial solvent, could include a higher risk of thyroid, liver and kidney damage,Easily installed solar mounting systems for flat roof racking and pitched roofs. and pregnant women who drank from the system may have had a higher risk of having children born with heart problems, according to the report.
People older than 25 who lived in Old Fort and drank municipal water during that four-year period are encouraged to talk with their physicians about potential risks of exposure.
“Our goal is to inform the public of a risk that may have occurred in the 1980s so that individuals can talk with their health care providers,” State Health Director Laura Gerald said. “Any knowledge about potential exposure can help health care providers make more informed recommendations regarding lifestyle changes, health screenings and treatment.”
Old Fort Mayor Pro Tem Sue Gibbs said today the issue doesn’t seem to be generating much concern among town residents.
“Not from anybody I’ve heard from,” said Gibbs, a lifelong resident of the town.It is one of the leading industrial laundry equipment manufacturers of industrial extractor, tumble dryer ect.“I’ve been drinking the town water for 70 years and haven’t had any problems,” she said.
The contamination was in a well that the Old Fort Finishing Company, a textile plant near Old Fort Elementary School, donated to the town of Old Fort when the plant closed in 1984, according to the state report. The well was disconnected from the town’s water supply in January 1988 after the contamination was discovered. Three private drinking water wells nearby also were found to be contaminated.
Health concerns weren’t immediately raised because the harmful effects of TCE exposure weren’t discovered until 2011, officials said.
The number of people affected may be relatively small because the town also operated four other wells that were not contaminated, the report said.
Groundwater contamination by TCE also was found at another site near the school, a former dry cleaning business that shut down 10 years ago.
Because TCE in soil and groundwater can evaporate and enter the indoor air of buildings, health officials sampled air at the elementary school but determined there was no threat to staff or students, according to the report. Air also was deemed safe at the Gateway Museum and in a laundromat and gift shop that now occupy the old dry cleaning building.

6 Things To Make You Feel Like A Kid Again
Enough already! You are stressed out. Overworked. Underpaid. And buried under your day-to-day life.Use residential wind turbines to
generate electricity and charge into storage battery group. Sure, you
could practice yoga, try to eat healthier and learn to rest more. But
how about, for one brief moment, recapturing your youth. For me, these
six things do the trick.
Get on your bike and ride! But there is more. Make sure when you ride you get a chance to ride down a great, big, steep hill. I am nowhere near ready for Le Tour de France, but I do have a special Sunday route that forces me to bike two miles up a hill. It is an exhausting workout and sometimes I don't think I'll make it. But then comes the downhill part. The wind in my face and speed I pick up make me feel amazing and youthful, like I have no cares in the world. And for those few minutes, riding fast down that hill,Creating a solar panel cells out of broken re-used solar cell pieces. I don't. If you need to get someone to drive you up that great, big, steep hill in a car, do it! But for youth's sake, get yourself down that hill on a bike.
Grab your favorite childhood book and read! For me, a poet, it is Shel Silverstein's Where the Sidewalk Ends. That book, published in 1974, remains dear to me for it is the book that inspired me to write poetry. I can still remember discovering it in the library of my second grade classroom during, what my kids refer to today as, DEAR time (Drop Everything and Read). I was entranced and engaged by each and every poem, laughing, thinking and nodding in approval. Reading this book today recreates in me a sense of wonder and excitement from my youth.
Find yourself a waterslide and slip-slide away! It doesn't have to be some scary death drop. It can even be more of a lazy river. The point is to slide, water splashing on your face, dunking you into a final pool of water.Learn more about our high capacity laundry dryer today! That sensation is one that can momentarily take you away from the stresses of your grown-up world and slide you back to simpler, easier time.
Listen to your favorite 10-year-old, Top 40 song. It is easy now with iTunes. Search for your song in the iTunes library, buy it and get it on your device. Fast. I have fond memories of my white,You will never need to change the bulbs and your solar led light will last for years and years. Formica clock radio. I would sit by it for hours listening to the music on my station, 99X. In fact, I even spent a good year answering our telephone, "99X is my radio station," because of a promotion the station ran. Back then I had to wait for hours until my favorite song played. Now, with one touch it's playing on my phone. So, while not the best song ever written, listening to The Streak,You've determined that a solar photovoltaic system is the right choice for you. by Ray Stevens, is guaranteed to make me smile and brings me back my green bedroom and white Formica clock radio.
Get yourself some pink cotton candy and let it melt on your tongue! As the author of Poems on Fruits & Odes to Veggies -- Where Healthy Eating Starts With a Poem, this may sound like a strange suggestion, as cotton candy is not even a remotely healthy food choice -- heck, is it even a food? But you don't have to eat the whole thing. I doubt you could anyway. But just the melting sensation of sugar on your tongue can do the trick of bringing you back, for one brief moment, to your days of carnivals and circuses and festivals; days that have melted away, much like the sugar on your tongue.
And finally this one is more of a don't than a do but: Don't do laundry. Don't do dishes. And absolutely don't pay bills. Naturally, this is a short-term thing, but there is nothing like throwing a load of stinky, smelly sports clothes and wet towels picked up off the bathroom floor, into the washing machine, that can reverse the momentary benefits provided by the above five youth-graspers.
