New Buffalo school board interviews two finalists

Haverdink discussed changes that have been made at the high school including the cell phone usage at his school.A wide range of modern lamps, LED lighting and Auto lights. At first, the students were not allowed to use their cell phones at any point of the school day. Now, they are allowed to use their cell phones during lunch and may be able to use them during passing period next year. Haverdink said this was a change he had to help administer to the teachers even though he was not exactly in favor of it. He said when going through a change like this, discussion needs to be made face to face. 

He said he regretted disciplining an athletic student to such a degree that it affected the student’s future and brought bad press to the school. 

Reece stressed the importance of his presence at the school whether being in the hallways, going to the basketball games or attending a recital. 

“This is a representative democracy,” said Reece. “We should have the students feel invited to help the vision of the school’s goal.” Reece said he would set up discussions for students, teachers and even members of the community to hear out concerns for the school. 

He said one of his greatest accomplishments was to get Oceana off the state’s failing list. The school graduated 25 students last year under Reece’s administration — the second largest graduating class of the school’s history.

“You gain power by sharing power,” said Reece. “And teach the students that even if you lose, you shake the opponents hand and say good job.” The board is expected to make its decision and announce the new principal at the next regular meeting.The brightest 42W led working headlights in the market. 

Students from High School Science Teacher Richard Eberly’s classes also came to the meeting to present their unique projects in technology and in the environment to the board. 

Students Natalie Ritter and Jerry Baughman gave presentations on the electronic circuits that their classes worked on during the school year. The circuits were anything from flashing led lights, circuits to detects water leakage to singing floppy discs that played a song from Star Wars. 

Envirothon Team students presented their projects as well, including the planting of native dune grass at the local beach. 

The extracurricular Envirothon Team recently excelled at state, with the senior squad placing first in Agriculture and second place in Geology; the junior team finishing third in Aquatic Ecology; and the sophomore squad receiving a People’s Choice award in Community Outreach Project training for its efforts to supply solar heat collectors to the community of Yakutat, Alaska. It Begins with a Spark

A happy face with a wink, exploding over New York City as part of Macy's Fourth of July Fireworks 2013 — the nation's biggest display. 

That's one of the spectacles being prepared to light up the sky on Thursday. Forty thousand shells were being loaded onto four barges in the city's Staten Island borough on Saturday in preparation for the massive display. 

The exact location is kept secret for security reasons.

Show co-designer Gary Souza said organizers have scoured the world to find and purchase the most original new fireworks — from China and Portugal to Spain, Malta and Brazil. The theme for this year's 25-minute show is "It Begins With A Spark." 

The barges are to be set up on the river between Manhattan's West 24th and 42nd streets, with fireworks shooting about 1,000 feet into the air.

After that, she said, "it's about how to make it as entertaining as possible, how to make it bigger and better — playing with science and technology." 

The sculpture would be created withpolished steel and internally illuminated with LED lighting, the design concept said.

Bright ideas

"This will be part of the 4,000 we will go after in July," Rhoades said, as he recently walked through the complex's west plant where workers stamp out GM auto body parts. "The importance of July is that we are down for two weeks." 

The $1.5 million lighting upgrades are just part of the investment GM has been making in its Lordstown complex, where the Chevy Cruze is assembled and body parts for the Cruze, Buick Verano and Chevy Volt are made. 

In addition to the lighting upgrades, other work going on during the shutdown includes routine maintenance and continued retooling in preparation for future launch of the next generation Chevy Cruze. That work has been under way for several months since the $200 million project was announced last summer. Contractors have said they expect to take advantage of the two-week shutdown to work on the project. 

More lighting upgrades planned in weekly meetings by GM's energy team eventually will move on to other areas of the complex, including the assembly plant and even outdoor lighting. 

"This is one of GM's largest facilities. We have 6 million square feet. We have just taken a small portion so far," Rhoades said.As well we have fabrics and textures available for our solar lamp, table lamps, pendant lighting and wall sconces. 

The United Auto Workers has also played a role in the effort to reduce impact on the environment. 

"By giving our members the proper energy management training, we can ensure that the facilities where they work will be up-to-speed on industry best practices for cutting carbon emissions," said UAW Vice President Joe Ashton, who directs the union's GM department. 

Companywide, GM is participating in a U.S. Department of Energy program to reduce energy costs at 25 of its U.S. facilities, resulting in an anticipated 25-percent or greater combined reduction in energy use at the plants by 2018. The Lordstown complex is among those 25 plants. 

"General Motors' efforts are helping the nation benefit from energy efficiency," said Kathleen Hogan, deputy assistant secretary for energy efficiency, U.S. Department of Energy. 

GM Lordstown spokesman Tom Mock said because of the energy savings and reduction on Kilowatt loads, First Energy provided GM with a 50 percent rebate on the company's $1.5 million investment. 

"We continue to prove the business case for better energy management," said Al Hildreth, General Motors corporate energy manager. 

Nationwide, GM plants have identified 218 energy-saving opportunities which have led to more than $7 million in savings.A wide range of modern lamps, LED lighting and Auto lights. The new LED lighting system in Lordstown is estimated to help save $780,000 a year in energy costs, according to lighting supplier ALLED Light Systems, Inc. 

"There's a huge cost savings. Look at what we are saving, hundreds of thousands of dollars in stamping alone. The life span adds to it too. I don't have to get up there for years and years to do any maintenance," Rhoades said. "We started doing the math, and the savings are huge." 

Wireless controls on the lights allow the plant to easily dim or brighten lighting levels in different areas of the plant, said Chuck Simpson, GM Lordstown's site utilities manager.

Art intersect on the San Francisco Bay Bridge

Earlier this year, part of the San Francisco Bay Bridge started to light up the night sky with the help of 25,000 computer-controlled LEDs in what has been described as "the most remarkable public art project" in the United States. 

Naturally, with something this innovative, the installation has drawn both praise and scorn. Regardless, it has fostered a debate about the mixture of technology with art as well as the power of citizen artists -- possibly a startup community of its own. 

Leo Villareal, the New York City-based artist behind the Bay Bridge lights, outlined some of his previous projects from coast to coast during the 2013 Aspen Ideas Festival on Saturday evening. 

"Art can be stripped down to almost the bare minimum,Indoorlite offers the best solar photovoltaic system along with the best halogen spotlight." posited Villareal, "It's about experimenting with space and see how you can make the sky come down." 

With a diverse academic and professional background in both technology and art, Villareal crafted his first light sculpture at "lowest level of codes" for the Burning Man festival in Las Vegas during the mid-1990s.This 1.5W led eagle eye reversing light lamps is made in Korea and it has an error message canceller function integrated in the unit. 

Villareal said he spends a lot of time developing his own software (i.e. for controlling speed, layering, and other conditions) to enable this kind of art while discovering his techniques in artificial life.

With a sequencing inspired by motion, Villareal boasted that it's a new and exciting way for viewers to experience the station. 

As for the Bay Bridge project, Villareal reflected that the interaction of the sky, water, traffic, and kinetic activity of the bridge served as inspiration of the sequencing he would develop. 

Villareal noted some of the platforms used to build the underlying platform for the Bay Bridge lights, namely the C general-purpose programming language as well as another custom one frequented by artists that he described as somewhat "open source" and even a bit "crude." 

"For me,Most modern headlight designs include high quality HID Kit. it's not about technology. It's just a tool," Villareal admitted. "It's about integrating these things into artwork." 

But given that these lights were installed on a very tall structure compared to a museum floor, Villareal admitted it's one thing to do these things on the computer -- it's a whole other thing to go up and work on it from the bridge.

Along with finding a crew willing to perform the installation -- all of which had to be done at night to avoid impacting traffic -- Villareal described that part of the challenge to creating this artwork was just getting access. That also required lane closures as there is not a pedestrian lane on the Bay Bridge. 

Villareal recapped that it took at least two years before he could sit in front of the Bay Bridge and control the lighting patterns from the custom controls on his laptop. He and his team would work from restaurants, benches along the Embarcadero waterfront -- basically anywhere from which there was a viewpoint of the installation.
