Enhancement of efficiencies in large area organic solar cells

It is generally noticed that large area devices have lower efficiencies than small area devices. This constraint of a single large area cell need not be applicable to device architecture where the large area can comprise of an array or collection of small area cells.

The complexity of manufacturing the array can be reduced with the use of printable electrodes (vacuum free fabrication of solar cell without glove-box !). The issue of leaving a sizable fraction of non-active area unutilized, over a large area structure then needs to be addressed. We have recently implemented a strategy where the sizable fraction of dead-zone in a module comprising of these small-area pixilated cells can be utilized profitably.

The large area fabrication of the module was carried using meltable alloys as cathodes and an architecture which permits channelizing the light back into the device utilizing appropriate fluorescent dye molecules embedded in the encapsulant. The dye chosen in the present work compensated the low absorption green-region of the donor-acceptor polymer and emitted in the NIR region which corresponded to the high absorption-efficient region of the polymer.

The efficiency of these devices was demonstrated to increase by as much as 12% upon inclusion of the suitable dye dispersed layer. The utilization of unabsorbed light by the reemission from a layer external to the active structure has not been previously addressed in the field.
