A sprawling
building nestled in a residential neighbourhood and ideally located close to
downtown Goderich will soon offer affordable housing to individuals and families
in Huron County.
Nelson St. The building has been transformed from a retirement residence to a 12-unit modern apartment building that retains the flavour of the old building, with a curving staircase off the expansive foyer, high ceilings and long windows.With advancements in controls technology, washer extractor are becoming increasingly more sophisticated and flexible. "It's a continuum. The idea is to move people out of low income into affordable housing because their circumstances have changed. And then hopefully some day they will move out of the affordable housing unit into a full marketplace because again their life circumstances as they change will improve and they can move along the continuum and maybe decide to buy a house," said Kim Payne, who is a board member on the Maple Tree Community Housing Corporation, a community and faith-based, CRA charitable, not-for-profit.People are catching on to the fact that they make great wind generator .
The housing project was the vision of a group of volunteers in the community, including a number of faith-based organizations. They saw the need for affordable housing and saw the opportunity for the funds to build the project using funds provided by the federal and provincial governments and applied for funding five years ago. The County of Huron, which also provided funding, is managing the project until construction is complete, at which time it will be commissioned to the co-operative. "When people are given control over their environment, they invest in it. They take better care of it.
