In other business, selectmen awarded a contract not to exceed $700,000 to Siemens Industries for LED streetlights.The whole variety of the brightest automobile led lamps factory is now gathered under one roof. 

Public Works Director Bill Chenard said the contract is part of a bid the Metropolitan Area Planning Council put out with several municipalities. The contract guarantees a specified amount of energy savings, covers installation of fixtures and gives the town a 10-year warranty on both the installation and product itself. 

Chenard said LED fixtures would be installed in most street lights, fixtures on school driveways and municipal parking lots and in lights downtown.“The payback is just huge,” he said, noting the LEDs provide a 50 to 75 percent energy savings. 

As a result, the town reduced its fiscal 2014 streetlight budget, and may be able to make further reductions in the fall, he said. 

Town Administrator Martha White praised Chenard for being on the forefront of the initiative and pushing the utility company to charge a cheaper rate to communities with LED lights since they use less electricity than traditional ones.
