Steps to develop Bhairabkunda as tourist hub

UDALGURI, May 9 – A high level delegation of Assam Environmental NGO Forum visited JFMC (Joint Forest Management Committee), Sapangaon near Indo-Bhutan border at Bhairabkunda on May 2 to study and suggest its up gradation to an eco-tourism hot-spot. The delegation included Mubina Akhtar, Green Reporter and Coordinator, Assam Environmental NGO Forum, Guwahati and its core members Nitul Nath (Aranya Surakshya Samiti), Dr Bibhuti Lahkar, Dr Abdul Wakid and Ashoka Dey (Aaranyak), Raj Phukan (Green Guard), among others.

Udalguri Deputy Commissioner Thaneswar Malakar, Dhansiri forest division officials Girindra Adhikari (DFO) and MP Sarma (ACF), and Jayanta Kumar Das,LED street lighting is the ideal solution for energy efficient street lighting due to their long life. honorary Wildlife Warden, Udalguri also visited the pictureque man-made forest along with the visiting environmental workers. The visiting members had a discussion with the DC and DFO where a large number of JFMC members and mediapersons were also present.

Malakar offered to develop infrastructure like construction of cottages with drinking water and sanitation facilities for visitors. Aaranyak, Assam offered to install nine solar light panels in the JFMC, while Green Guard and Aaranyak jointly offered to provide an early warning system to check ‘man-elephant conflict’. The Forum members also decided to organise awareness meetings at vulnerable locations in the district in cooperation with the civil and forest administrations.

It needs mention that six villages on the Indo-Bhutan border at Bhairabkunda joined hands with the forest department in successfully regenerating a stretch of barren sandy land into a forest. The results of this quiet community initiative done under joint forest management (JFMC) are evident with the regenerated forest expanse of 5 sq km already emerging as a shelter of wild animals and birds.

The 22.24 sq km Bhairabkunda reserve forest was left without a single tree by the early 1980s due to rampant illegal logging. Conservation activists hoped that the place would draw the attention of tourists from all over the world if the government develope necessary infrastructure in the area. A small river with several canals – a few of those man-made – runs through the forest, providing replenishment for the green cover.

In an effort to provide clean, affordable and sustainable lighting in the remote areas of Uttarakhand, Perfetti Van Melle India (PVM India) has launched a solar electrification project.

The project is the company’s CSR initiative and is being implemented in collaboration with TERI. In its first phase, 50 solar-powered LED lanterns were given to 50 households – about 250 people. To charge these lanterns, a solar charging station has been installed at village Dugari Khatta 1, which comes under the gram panchayat of Biriya Block in Khatima District of Udham Singh Nagar.

Situated on the foothills of the Himalayas, Dugari Khatta 1 and Dugari Khatta 2 are dense forest areas where electricity is yet to reach. Most people in these areas still rely on traditional kerosene lamps – the hazards of which are known to all – for their day-to-day chores.

Interestingly, the centralized solar charging station is run by a woman entrepreneur who has been trained by TERI for basic operations and maintenance. She will also be responsible for monitoring and maintaining logbooks and faults/rectification status, daily upkeep of the lanterns and solar panels, as well as maintaining contact with energy enterprises for the regular service of lanterns.Modern dry cleaning machine uses non-water-based solvents to remove soil and stains from clothes
