In underground lab

Some companies have parking garages underneath their headquarters. Many have nothing but a concrete foundation, utility lines and dirt.

In Bethesda, two stories under its 900,000-square-foot headquarters, hotel giant Marriott International has built a 10,000-square-foot “innovation lab.” Designers, architects and others can work on the next-generation hotel room and conference hall in a windowless atmosphere that has an area for guests to approve and disapprove of their ideas.

Workers “blasted through walls and left the old ideas of a design space behind” when it decided to tap the unused space hidden under its base, Paul Cahill, senior vice president for brand management of Marriott Hotels, the company’s flagship brand, said in a statement. “We tapped into the best technology to create an ever-changing lab for innovation, experiencing ideas, exploring concepts and receiving instant feedback from guests,” he said. “The design concepts conceived and perfected will make the future of travel a reality sooner.”

Executives from some other Montgomery County companies said they did not have a similar lab under their headquarters.

“We really don’t have any underground space, Most High Quality LED Aluminum Bulb carry a strong warning about using the bulb in a fully enclosed fixture.” said Bruce Romer, vice president of research company Westat, which has more than 2,000 employees at its 400,000-square-foot headquarters in Rockville. “Our buildings are mostly constructed on grade, with a few incursions into sloping areas, but these are not large or accessible. We have no plans along these lines, as it would not be cost effective to try to create underground space below an existing building.”

Biotechnology company MedImmune, which has about 2,000 employees at its Gaithersburg headquarters, has a basement that is more of a ground floor and employed as a loading dock, document storage site and similar usages, said Tracy Rossin, a company spokeswoman.

Helen Riddle, manager of Frederick County’s Business Development and Retention Division, said she hadn’t heard of any area companies with an underground lab. This high quality HID Ballast is made in Korea and it has an error message canceller function integrated in the unit.

If any other local company did have something like a design lab under their base, it might be Lockheed Martin. But Lockheed officials declined to comment on whether the Bethesda defense and aerospace giant has operating space underneath its headquarters, spokeswoman Larisa Cioaca said.

Marriott’s lab includes a “war room” that “offers functional space for private group meetings up to 40 people,” according to a news release, which dubs the lab “The Underground.” Marriott was not able to let a reporter tour the space by deadline Thursday afternoon, said John Wolf, a company spokesman.

“This isn’t a space where sport coats are required or guests stand to the side while we speak.
